The Family Union Borck / Bork

The roots of the name Bor(c)k and its meaning aren't absolutely sure today. But there are some hints, that the origin is the Slavic word "bork" which means "wolf". Another possible source is the Scandinavian word "bork" for "castle". But many of the Bor(c)k's have their roots in the area of Pomerania and East Prussia, where a family of robber-knights named Bork lived in the late Middle Ages. So the first theory seems to be the better one.

The different ways to spell the name Bork - with ck, k, g or even ch - are a result of the fact, that most of the pastors keeping church books wrote down names by ear in the last centuries. Spelling wasn't as significant as it is today.

If we suppose that many of the Borck's, Bork's, Borg's and Borch's all over the world don't have this name by chance but by - still unproved - relationship, it makes sense to search together for roots and maybe even for the original Bor(c)k. Such a research in a combined effort is one of the goals of the "Family Union Borck / Bork", which was established in 1927. I myself have not only got new information about my roots but also have found some "new" living relatives with the help of this union.

In spite of the common interest in Genealogy the union isn't a circle of grey-bearded archivists but a group of people of every age wishing to have fun together, too. On the annual meetings in different places all over Germany everyone can find out, that the Bor(c)k's are not only connected by the name but by their dry humor for example and their big ears, too...
